Sarah read Zoology for her first degree, and then English Literature for her Masters, followed by an M.Litt. in Applied Linguistics. She taught English Language and Literature at universities in Kerala, Bombay, Japan (Shinshu University, Matsumoto) and at the British Council in Colombo, Sri Lanka. She was working at Jai Hind College, Bombay, when she left India to get married and settle down in England. She taught Afro-Caribbean and Asian Literature at Homerton College, University of Cambridge, as a part-time lecturer and tutor.

She lives in Cambridge with her husband. Their son is away at university. 
Two resident Springer Spaniels act as in-house personal trainers and editorial consultants.
